Oh Canada! December 11, 2005
Back to Canada for a week! I took the chance to have a brief holiday in Canada, exploiting the excessively long weekend that was available to us citizens of Milano. My flight departed from Milano Malpensa at 9.15, so I had to wake up fairly early to be there the canonical 2 hours before flight departure. In fact, I woke up at 5.00!
The first flight to Amsterdam was painless, but I couldn’t get any sleep even if I wanted. In Shipol I waited for 2 hours before my flight to Montreal. As soon as I got on the plane I expected a boring flight: it was a Boeing 767, meaning that there was only one movie on show on a little TV screen far away.
During the 7 hours of flight I talked to the girl next to me, a french journalist, read, and also slept a bit. I noticed how the food on airlines is getting sponsored by famous brands: I had an Uncle Ben’s dinner and a Bertolli snack. I don’t know if the food is actually produced by the brands (Bertolli makes oil, not grilled vegetable sandwiches?), but I am not sure it is a good commercial, given the average quality.
After arriving in Montreal, I was picked up by Emily and we started our journey to Ottawa by car, stopping at a very nice B&B on the way.
The following days were spent walking in the Gatineau park, visiting the Ottawa war museum (very nice, but no cameras allowed), watching movies and having all kinds of food I can’t find in Italy (Thai and Teriyaki steaks, as an example).
I liked especially the War Museum: they have a nice display of history through objects, pictures and videos. They also built a WW1 trench that you can walk into, and trust me it feels really scary.
Now it’s already time to go back, and even if Ottawa is a frozen wasteland I have to say I felt a bit nostalgic at being there once again.
